Is Android Auto ready for Japan?

Challenge we were trying to solve:

Add a UX-based framework to product testing with Japanese language speakers.

The research approach and methods used:

Remote unmoderated usability testing of 33 tasks in two-hour sessions (11 users), quantitative surveys, bug reporting.

One or two key learnings:

Without getting into details, users were impressed with the voice recognition and response in Japanese of Android Auto, but certain phrases and tasks gave the system trouble. We crafted and provided client with system usability scale results, along with results from Likert-scale questions which followed tasks, to provide the client with a high-level product readiness assessment for the Japanese market.

Impact of our research findings on design or strategies:

Client incorporated our detailed feedback and three months later, the product launched flawlessly in Japan with support in Audi A4, Honda Accord, and select Maserati and VW vehicles.
